Hi, I’m Alex, and I’m so happy you are here.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and professionally trained therapist. I am an athlete, dog mom, foodie, and aspiring (aka struggling) gardener.
About Me
Throughout my 11+ years practicing as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker I have found that whether folks are coming to therapy for the first or fifth time, that being my genuine self has brought others at ease during our time together. This will often include use humor, compassion, honesty and occasional sarcasm. What it won’t include is rigidity, judgment, panic or shame. My work is deeply relational and I care for my clients immensely. I received my Master's degree in Clinical Social Work with Advanced Standing from the University at Albany, New York. When I’m not working I enjoy spending as much time with my two dogs as possible, and it is likely that at some point they will pop their heads into our session together.
I recognize therapy can be a series of terrifying events. As someone who openly has engaged in therapy myself, I understand what it feels like sitting in your chair talking to a complete stranger asking for help with some of the scariest, most painful and vulnerable aspects of your life. The courage, dedication, gall and commitment required in order to continuously work on yourself, to be honest and show self compassion does not get lost on me. I have the upmost respect for people who dare to challenge themselves, really look in the mirror and ask the “whys, hows, what ifs,” all in the name of learning more about what it means to be human and utilize their power and strengths. I’ve had the privilege of working with many diverse populations across the lifespan. I have worked in community based settings, residential programs, urban schools, psychiatric emergency rooms in Massachusetts and New York, as well as outpatient and primary care settings. I have worked with individuals, families, couples, school personnel, LGBTQ BIPOC persons, persons of various immigration statuses and first time mothers.
Admittedly, my passion is working with first responders, law enforcement, military (both active and retired) and other healthcare workers. I recognize first handedly how demanding, isolating and impactful these professions can be on a person’s day to day life, and yet, we love to do it anyway.
Areas of Treatment Include:
Depressive and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, post-traumatic stress and acute stress disorders, trauma, substance use, family of origin conflict, life transitions, suicidal thinking, psychosis, difficulty within interpersonal relationships, chronic pain, and LGBTQ associated stressors.
Modalities that I frequently use include:
Trauma Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Bowenian theories, Freudian theories, Internal Family Systems, motivational interviewing, holistic practices, and mind/body connection.
Currently, I am pursuing the completion of my certificate in Somatic Therapy for anxiety to incorporate into my practice.
If you get the chance, there is this really great cartoon on the internet that depicts how I visualize the relationship between therapist and client. If you can imagine two people sitting in chairs facing one another, the one on the left is talking. The words are represented as this tangled, messy almost chaotic hunk of string. The person to the right is listening and above their head is a thought bubble that is taking that messy string and weaving it into a neat, organized ball of yarn with the intent to hand it back to the person on the left. Therapy is about not only hearing but listening; not only empathizing but empowering change.
